Moving shipping containers is heavy work. Moving a traditional industry into the digital age is a different kind of heavy job. We built an ops management platform for RMS Intermodal, one of the largest rail yard operators in the U.S. Their IoT solution gave RMS a data-driven view of their operations for the first time, resulting in a whole new definition of “efficiency” for the company.

Mobile app
The INTRMODL mobile app transforms Android tablets in each vehicle into connected IoT devices. These tablets stream GPS coordinates, allowing real-time tracking of vehicle movement, job progress, and worker activities. Managers can use the app to monitor performance, optimize workflows, and respond quickly to issues in the yard.

Yard Map
Managers now have a bird’s eye view of all their workers and vehicles in a dedicated manager’s app. During unloading activity, they can track precisely who’s doing what and take quick action to correct or fine-tune the activities. Managers can forgo the radio and communicate with one or the whole crew via the app, as well as stay on top of maintenance needs.
Yard Stats
Yard efficiency is measured by job completion speed and workforce costs. The system helps managers assess how quickly shipping containers are moved on and off trains while tracking individual worker behavior—both good and bad. This data allows for more informed decision-making and better workforce management.
Safety & Compliance
Using tablets, managers can stay mobile, submit safety audits, and keep track of yard conditions in real time. The platform simplifies compliance reporting and helps ensure that safety procedures are consistently followed.
